(303) The Science and Magic of Eco-Printing. Part 1 of 2
NOTE: This is a 1-day, 2-session class. It is amazing what can be gleaned from the natural world and used to make prints, colors and patterns on cloth. This class will explore using natural materials such as leaves, flowers, fruit, minerals and the like to print and color our projects. Teaching will include lecture, handouts and demonstration.
Learn the process to mordant the materials for optimal success; create dye baths, including an indigo vat for pre- and post-dipping; learn how to use minerals to adjust the colors; and gain an understanding of the care and aging of a naturally dyed piece.
The first half of the class will concentrate on the science of the process, answering questions such as: how and why a dyer might choose to prep materials, what natural materials a dyer would choose for the best results, and how do I experiment if I don’t know what my dye materials are? The second half will concentrate on technique and fun!
