Explore an ancient technique of sprang to make stretchy fabric: no loom and no weft. Threads are attached to a fixed point and your fingers manipulate the threads to create the structure. The result is a “Plain Weave” (1-1 interlace) strap where threads travel “on the bias”. You will begin with an already setup warp. The focus is mastery of the basic stitch. Irregularities (mistakes) are viewed as an invitation to better understand structure and to create surface designs. When the initial project is completed you will receive expert assistance to set up from scratch.
You can expect to complete at least two pieces, a friendship bracelet and a small scarf or bag. Time permitting you will explore related structures, the 2-2 interlace, and some of its variations. You will explore this structure as a free-end braid. Those familiar with sprang are welcome to bring your sprang frame, as this structure lends itself nicely to that approach.
