Ply-splitting started with camel herders fashioning girths for saddles and packs. Today artists have taken ply-splitting to the next dimension – 3D! We’ll start with a few simple braids to get you comfortable with the gripfid and the quarter twist. We’ll move on to a small basket where you’ll learn how to form a three dimensional ply-split object.
Once you have mastered the basics, it’s on to a larger basket where you select the design parameters – color order, side height and side shape(s). Your finished product will be a basket unique to you, your imagination and your ability to ply a gripfid. I will teach you the skills; you will make the creative decisions. By the end of the session you will be equipped with the tools needed to ply-split three dimensional items on your own.

Instructor Bio
Rebecca was attracted to ply-split braiding as a portable weaving method 15 years ago. Each design begins with cords, 16 strands and 20 feet at a time. With a basic shape in mind, her three-dimensional pieces grow and morph into whimsical objects d’art that have been displayed on three continents and won awards in New England, including two HGA Awards. Rebecca also shares her ply-splitting skills spontaneously, teaching anyone who shows an interest (and doesn’t run away!). Ply-splitting taught her that unweaving is not only OK, but often necessary and ultimately fulfilling!
