So you’ve mastered the basics of sprang, and want to take it to the next step. This class accompanies you on your exploration of sprang lace.

Beginners to sprang lace will work through a series of motifs assembled by the instructor. These take you step by step, through the lace stitches in historic sprang lace. We explore the stitches, how to make holes in your work on purpose, how to control the placement of the holes, how the notation refers to the stitches, and how to write your own patterns from scratch. Beginners will leave with a set of lace samples. Those already familiar with the basic sprang lace stitches might want to explore a more complicated set of motifs creating a lovely personalized lace scarf/shawl.

Carol says: “Peter Collingwood wrote that he doubted a system could be devised to represent all possibilities for sprang stitches. He had not met me. I’ve been able to devise such a system, and have yet to find the piece of sprang lace that cannot be notated by my system. I share the system with participants in this class. We will learn to make the stitches, how the chart and instructions relates to the stitches, and as well as explore ways to create your own charts.

I have been producing books of sprang lace patterns, based on museum collections. I will offer these to participants. Once you have mastered the basic rules, anything that can be rendered in an outline drawing can become a sprang lace pattern … I will show students how.

I am ticking “beginner” for experience level, anticipating that eligibility to this class is my introductory class or equivalent: comfortable setting up a sprang frame, working the basic interlinking stitch, and a finishing technique or two.”

Instructor will provide: warp materials and instruction sheets for beginners to sprang lace. A set of patterns will be available for download and printing from a web page specially dedicated to the class.

Those who have already taken Carol’s sprang lace class, have a frame, and who want to make a scarf or shawl, are invited to contact her ahead of time to discuss their project for the class, to begin discussions on appropriate patterns and warp.
