(111) Experimentation with Weaving Tools: Open Reed and More
“Tool Modification” is a term that directs a weaver’s attention to the mutability of their looms and tools. Yes, we can manipulate our equipment to change the expected outcome of a weave structure. And we can do it easily and economically when we take time to observe and analyze what we do and are trying to achieve with our textile work.
In this workshop, we will identify opportunities for warp and weft manipulation through understanding loom workings. We will use hand-manipulation techniques to give new meaning to our equipent. The more we examine what our looms and accessories actually do, the broader the opportunities become for what equipment CAN do! Looking at our equipment with a fresh perspective allows creativity and originality to flourish. Contemporary tools such as RailReed, Open Reed, Supplementary Beater, and sectional Rigid Heddles will be used as alternatives that transform the expected outcome of our cloth.
Students will use a pre-warped loom to weave samples of these hand manipulation techniques. Although we will be working with basic threadings, participants need to be comfortable understanding weaving basics and sleying, even though threading patterns will not change. Instructor will provide alternative tools for students to experiment with: open reeds, supplementary beaters, rail reed, and individual sectional rigid heddles, as well as some alternative weft materials that help emphasize the possibility of these structural modifications.
This workshop is suitable for Advanced Beginners and up.

Equipment required
4-shaft Loom, Pre-warped
Student Supplies:
- Pre-warped and threaded loom (8″ wide warp, 12″ weaving width)
- A few bobbins for weft materials
- Weaving notions (sley hook, scissors, thread weights, measuring tape, pins, etc)
- Pencil + notepad
Homework:
Dress your loom with a 10 – 12″ warp, threaded and un-sleyed. Instructions will be sent to students.
