(124) Weaving and Designing Four and Six Shaft Summer and Winter
There are endless options for weaving Summer and Winter using four or six shafts. In this workshop, start from the ground up to learn about Summer and Winter’s unique threading and treadling rules. Set up your loom with the option of using either four or six shafts. We’ll be using a skeleton tie-up to maximize your treadling potential. Jack-style and table looms are perfect for this class! (However, countermarche looms won’t work this workshop without exceptions due to the skeleton tie-ups). Take a deep dive into Summer and Winter’s ‘styles’ or ‘fashions’ and how they’re an integral part of the structure. Weave your gamp using multiple treadling, color and design options. Jill will discuss profile drafting and how it applies to Summer and Winter as a block weave and a unit weave. Explore weaving polychrome Summer and Winter and learn how to turn a Summer and Winter draft into a one shuttle weave, such as using turned taquete. Each participant will have a unique and wonderful gamp to take home. Get ready to weave, learn, have fun and get your creative juices flowing!
Prior to class, each participant will receive a four and six shaft detailed draft to choose from for dressing their loom, with yarn suggestions for the warp and weft, sett, etc. In class, Jill will provide a comprehensive booklet explaining and illustrating the fundamentals covered in class, from the initial styles to weaving Summer and Winter polychrome. Jill will have woven samples to illustrate examples of what you will be weaving in class.
Participants must have prior weaving experience on a multi-shaft loom and must be comfortable with reading and understanding a weaving draft, as well as working with two shuttles. Looms must be prepped in advance of class so that everyone is ready to weave.
