(121) The Art of Weaving Transparencies

2025-Workshop-Photos - 121_Smith_Transparencies_1 x

This workshop will introduce students to the weaving technique known as “transparency weaving” in which an open ground cloth is woven simultaneously with inlay that forms the design element. Students will learn how to weave designs in inlay using tapestry-based techniques for creating curved shapes or geometric forms. Advanced techniques will be presented for manipulating the inlay to create layered transparency. Students can create their own designs or choose from a variety of designs provided by the instructor. Ideas for how to effectively display transparent weavings will be discussed.
